Mandatory Parent's Meeting

Wednesday, December 3, 2008
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
West High School Cafeteria

We require that at least one parent be present at the meeting.  We will cover a variety of topics and answer any questions that you might have.

Wildcat Parents

Wildcat Wrestling needs YOU!

In 1980 the West Bend Wrestling Booster Club was formed by a group of wrestling parents.  That organization evolved to be what we now know as the Wildcat Wrestling Club.  Since its inception, nearly 30 years ago, this organization has been administered by a continuous stream of volunteer parent’s.  In the recent years, however, the number of parents willing to contribute has dwindled while the number of wrestlers has expanded significantly.  This has placed a recognizable burden on the small group people that currently make up the Wildcat Leadership Committee.  Of even greater concern is the fact that our current leadership committee is made of parent’s of children that will very soon be transitioning to High School and out of the Wildcat program.  If we are unable to pass this leadership role to another group of parents, the future of Wildcats will be in serious jeopardy.  Moreover, we are in a time when our community has come to rely on club programs as our primary opportunity for youth sports.  Simultaneously, our school district administered middle school sports have all but disappeared.

I would like to personally invite each of you to consider supporting the organization any way you can, no experience necessary.  If you would like learn more about how you can get involved, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Wrestling Gear

Headgear

The headgear does not protect the head -- it protects the ears.  The sole purpose of the headgear is to prevent the start or progression of cauliflower ear, which is extremely difficult to get at a young age; the West Bend Wildcat Wrestling Club requires all athletes wear headgear.   We recommend headgear that fits snug, without a big enough opening on top for your wrestler's head to fit through.  To avoid having the headgear slip down over a wrestler's head, stay away from headgears with the most space between the top and rear straps and adjust those straps short enough so there is no way it can possibly fit over the head.  If your wrestler has long hair a "hair slicker" (hair net that's made to work with the headgear) may be required.

Shoes

The wrestling shoe is a simple way to keep you shoes on while you are wrestling (regular gym shoes will fall off and don’t do quite well).  Laces can get in the way because they come untied too often.  Most tournaments now require laces be covered.  Most newer shoe designs have a wraparound upper strap, but you can also wrap athletic tape around the ankle to cover the laces prior to competition, which is very common.  Most shoes have the traction needed.  The split sole was introduced to offer flexibility for ease in bending the foot.  Avoid buying shoes that are a size or two too big.  Loosely fitted wrestling shoes can impede performance.

Knee Pads

These are more for facilitating knee motion (ability to slide against the mat) and can help execute some wrestling moves easier.  If you buy kneepads, the fit is important.  They need to be tight enough to stay up during competition but you don't want them too tight either, that difference can be a fine line.
